This month’s Farmersvile Quilt Guild meeting is being held March 14th, at 7:00 pm in the O. E. Carlisle Civic center.

Our special program this month will be Award Winning Author and Quilter Patience Griffin
Award-winning author Patience Griffin has been sewing her whole life but didn’t discover her love of quilting until her late thirties. She decided the best way to acquire her first quilt was to make one for herself. At nearly the same time, she started commuting three and half hours a day for her dream engineering job. To pass the time on the long drive, she got hooked on audiobooks—especially books with love stories. Within a couple of years, she was writing stories of her own. It was no surprise to her family and friends when she combined her love of quilting, her small town roots, and her obsession with Scottish romances into novels. She has gained some recognition with her September 11th Story Quilt which has toured the country as the property of the Pentagon. She has a master's degree in nuclear engineering but spends her days writing stories about hearth and home, and dreaming about the fictional small town of Gandiegow, Scotland.

Patience gained recognition as a quilter with her September 11th Story Quilt, which has toured the country as the property of the Pentagon. Washington Post staff writer, Barbara E. Martinez reviewed the quilt memorial when it was displayed at the Ronald Reagan Building in 2002. “One of the more comforting memorials to September 11 is on display in the Ronald Reagan Building atrium through September 15. The dozen "Pentagon Quilts" are representative of the 72 handmade quilts sent, unsolicited, to the Pentagon after last year's terrorist attacks.” Of Patience’s quilt she wrote, “The "Story Quilt" made by Patience Griffin of Marshalltown, Iowa, has intricate detail. It begins with the healthy Twin Towers, labeled "8:42 a.m.," and progresses through the story of 9/11. The "9:43 a.m." square shows the Pentagon. A lower square has a flag at half-staff.”
Patience’s quilt and many of the other 9/11 quilts are part of the scheduled rotation of exhibits throughout the Pentagon.

| JR is making a QOV block with the BOM's so at the end (Dec.) there will be a finished Quilt Of Valor. You might want wait to put your blocks together until we finish BOM in December to manage the colors. I wanted to start putting together to show it taking shape. ******************************************************************************

The quilt measures 65” x 65”
There are a total of fabric 457 applique pieces included
in the design.
There are a total of 1,210 sewn triangle and square
pieces, not including the center fabric square used as background and the four
straight pieces in the border.
The total number of pieces, including the border and
center are 1,672.
Total number of design hours = 56 hrs.
Total number of hours to sew the applique = 248 hrs.
Total number of sewing hours = 110 hrs.
Total number of hours of embroidery = 9 hrs.
Total hours to complete the quilt = 423 hrs.
The quilt was started on October 11, 2015 and finished
January 23, 2016.

“Texas
Maker” Quilt Symbolism
When deciding on the design of the quilt Ann Cardon
wanted to be true to the historic times that Collin McKinney lived in. Since
the scope of his life was very broad at ninety three years, she concentrated on
the years of the struggle for Texas independence in the 1830’s – 1840’s. The center medallion is of the style used by
early quilter’s including applique and inking and the fabrics are reminiscent
of the time period.
Symbols:
American and Texas flag showed the patriotism that was so
prevalent across the country. One was created at the beginning of his life and
the other was adopted in 1839 when Collin McKinney was helping with Texas
Independence.
Blue Bonnets, Indian Paintbrush, Wine Cup, Black-eyed
Susan, and Primroses have been favorite wildflowers to Texans for many
generations.
The surveyor’s transit and the bible represent two of
Collin McKinney’s occupations while in Texas.
Quilt blocks such as the Dogtooth and Hourglass were
favorites patterns shared and made by many women in the 1800’s. To show support
to the many Texan’s during the Texas Independence the Ohio Star block was
shared and renamed the “Texas” Star. Women
in the quilting community around the country would often place a “Texas” Star
in their quilt to remember friends or family in Texas.
The quilter, Jackie Brown, used many of the quilting
patterns used at the time such as the all over and close stitching called
Stippling and the straight lines in the border called Piano Keyes. She also
used variations of the Feather pattern that was and still is so popular in
quilts.

I think it's official - I have Spring Fever!!!! I'm looking forward to sharing the love with you at our meeting on Tuesday, February 14, 2017 at 7:00PM at the Civic Center in Farmersville. I can't wait to learn more about the Barn Quilt project!
We had an amazing sew day this past Saturday. JR won a prize from the QOV Foundation - we'll be anxious to find out what it is! Karen made the day special with an hourly raffle drawing and everyone brought food to share. Several quilt tops were completed. I'm so glad we're a part of the QOV initiative.
Is anyone interested in leading the Anniversary Party in June? Let me know.

There is certainly practically a full week March Madness of action before the NCAA tournament
