2011 April Meeting Sews With Cranky Women

April is the month for flowers and Easter eggs. It is also the month for the guild to try their "hands" at crank sewing machines. Monica and Mary Lynn brought five or six hand crank sewing machines to try. Monica showed how to wind the bobbins, oil, clean and crank the machines smoothly. Soon the group was hard at work sewing together strips of fabric. The machines run very quietly. Once the rhythm starts it becomes a very peaceful sewing experience. The machines themselves are almost works of art. Many have gold filigree and some are even set with mother of pearl designs. These machines originally came from England and Germany. They were made and sold in the late 1800's until about 1950. Monica and Mary Lynn both belong to the People Powered Peddlers which are a large group of local women that meet to sew monthly. The evening ended with door prizes and show and tell.
